This painting was inspired by Mary Thomas, who is known in the Caribbean as Queen Mary. She was one of the leaders in the 1878 "Fireburn" uprising against slave owners on St. Croix. She was always depicted as this strong woman who also looked rough and mean in most of the pictures/illustrations I saw of her. Imagine if she was portrayed as fearless, yet graceful?
